Abstract
1,048,783. Seaming non-metallic sheet material; laminates. AMERICAN BILTRITE RUBBER CO. Inc. Aug. 3, 1965, No. 33062/65. Headings B5K and B5N. Conveyer belting comprises (a) two carcass plies 10, 11 of textile material; (b) an intermediate layer 12 of rubber or other elastomeric sheet material located between the plies 10, 11; (c) outer cover plies 13, 14 of rubber composition or a synthetic resin enclosing the plies 10, 11; and (d) a spliced area in which the plies 10, 11 are severed and have butt joints 10<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>1</SP> at longitudinal spaced locations in the belt and an insert 17 of rubberized or adhesively coated textile material overlaps and strengthens the butt joints 10<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>1</SP> and fills a corresponding space provided by the removal of a section of the layer 12. The five plies of the belting are united in face-to-face contact by being cured or vulcanized under heat and pressure. Preferably, the plies 10, 11 comprise duck coated with adhesive and impregnated with rubber or synthetic resin. In splicing the belting, the plies are cut on a bias, Fig. 1 (not shown), and the layer 12 is exposed and a section cut away therefrom to provide a space in which the elastomeric material is wholly or partially removed to accommodate the insert 17. The latter may be of rubberized duck or of a woven textile having a polyester warp and a polyamide weft. Inserts 15, 16, which may have bevelled or undercut edges, are provided in the plies 13, 14 to cover the joints 10<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>1</SP>. After assembling the parts as shown, they are consolidated under heat and pressure.
