Abstract

909,483. Laminates. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. July 31, 1959 [Aug. 29, 1958], No. 27757/58. Class 140. Belting comprises at least one ply of textile material and has adjacent to at least one of its surfaces a sheet of elastomeric material incorporating textile flock, the fibres of which have lengths in the range of from 1 to 7 centimetres, and are orientated so that a majority of its fibres extend across the belting. The textile material may be a cotton duck, and preferably has its warp threads extending along the belt. The elastomeric material may be natural or synthetic rubber or a thermoplastic material such as plasticized polyvinyl chloride or polyvinylidene chloride or copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. The flock may be of cotton, jute, hemp, flax, rayon, nylon or polyester. The fibres thereof may be separate or in the form of tufts or bundles, or may be produced by cutting into short lengths a spun, twisted and doubled, or cabled yarn, and may be coated with a bonding agent, e.g. an organic isocyanate or a resorcinolaldehyde resin. Such belting may be made by adding flock to rubber, compounded for vulcanization, calendering the mix, which orientates the fibres, assembling alternate plies of this mix and fabric, and applying heat and pressure to vulcanize the rubber. The fabric may be frictioned with a vulcanizable rubber composition before assembly. Cover layers of vulcanizable rubber composition, which may also contain flock with its fibres orientated across the belt, may be applied.
