Abstract

586,762. Coating or impregnating fabrics. ANGUS & CO., Ltd., G., SOWERBY, G. A., and SHORT, W. S. Aug. 16, 1944, No. 15649. [Class 140] A friction surface belt consists of a strip of knitted fabric stretched to straighten the yarns and impregnated with rubber so as to prevent contraction of the fabric from its stretched length.. The rubber may be allowed to solidify in the interstices of the fabric from a wet, liquid or plastic condition, or the fabric is impregnated with rubber latex or rubber solution which is allowed to dry whilst the fabric is stretched or alternatively the latex is coagulated; or the fabric may be impregnated with rubber latex or rubber solution which is allowed to dry, warmed to soften the rubber, the fabric stretched while the rubber is plastic and maintained so stretched until the rubber has cooled and set. In each case, the rubber may be subjected to curing under heat and pressure. The amount of stretching is such that the extension at break of the finished product is 3-17 per cent. The fabric belting, e.g., of flax or cotton, is dropped into a bath of latex or rubber solution and when throughly wetted is passed over spiked rollers, the second pair of which rotates at a higher speed, and either through an oven in which it is dried or in the case of latex through a bath of acid or alcohol to coagulate the latex. Single or multi-ply belting may be treated, the lamination being effected either before or after the impregnation and stretching treatment. Joining of the belt is done by hand knitting, by chamfering and lapping under heat and pressure, or by the use of standard fasteners. Specifications 469,797, [Group V], and 586,786 are referred to.
