Abstract

An article consisting of or including woven, knitted, plaited or corded synthetic polyamide or superpolyamide fibres, filaments or ribbons is subjected in at least those parts of the article which are woven, knitted plaited or corded to a surface treatment with hot formic acid vapour obtained by boiling liquid formic acid for a time sufficient to cause transient surface dissolution of the polyamide or superpolyamide to take place and resolidification of the surface material then allowed to take place so that a glossy surface is obtained on the polyamide or superpolyamide and contiguous portions thereof are bonded together. The treated articles can be cut or stamped without the cut or stamped woven, knitted or plaited material fraying. The treated articles may be summer shoes, sandles, slippers or wristwatch straps.
