The drape of a non-woven fibrous fabric is increased by frictionally adhering the fabric P to a stretched resilient surface 15 and causing the surface 15 to contract while the fabric P is maintained in frictionally adherent contact thereagainst to subject the fabric P to a compressive force. A belt 15 having a contractible surface layer, preferably of rubber, and a relatively inextensible cord backing passes around rollers 10,11,12. A driven roller 13 is positioned as shown so that the outer surface of the belt 15 is convexly curved as it passes around the roller 10 and is thus stretched. The fabric P is fed into the nip N and is frictionally gripped by the belt 15 which contracts as it passes around the roller 13 to apply compressive forces to the fabric P parallel to the surfaces thereof. The fabric P may be dry or slightly moistened and the roller 13 may be at room temperature or heated. The fabric may be of man-made fibres or a mixture of man-made and natural fibres and suitable fibres include cotton, polyester and cellulosic, e.g. viscose and acetate rayon, fibres. A binder may be added to the fabric before treatment, e.g. a web of carded viscose rayon fibres maybe bonded with a 10% water based acrylic adhesive.
