Abstract
Cellulosic material, particularly cellulosic textile material, is irradiated with accelerated electron beams (b -rays) having a particle energy of less than 1 MeV, and preferably 0,05-0,6 MeV, the material being heated during or after irradiation to induce cross-linking between cellulose molecules with consequent improvement in mechanical properties such as dimensional stability, and resistance to shrinking and abrasion. Suitable radiation is conveniently derived from electron accelerators, or from radio-active sources, e.g. Sr90 or Kr85. The total dosage of radiation, usually 103-107 rad. and preferably 104-106 rad. (1 roentgen=0,83 rads., approx.) is sufficient to effect the desired cross-linking while leaving the mechanical properties of the material unimpaired. The cellulosic material may be topochemically modified, prior to irradiation, by compounds such as isopropylbenzoyl chloride, which promotes the formation of "active" groups as in the parent Specification. The process may be applied to yarns, filaments, threads or woven, non-woven or knitted fabrics composed wholly or partly of natural cellulose, e.g. cotton or of regenerated cellulose, and also regenerated cellulose film and paper. In the examples, bleached poplin, renforc<\>e cotton and bleached cotton voile are irradiated to a total dosage of 105-106 rads. Heating of the irradiated material is effected by steam or warm air.
