Abstract
<PICT:0725343/IV (c)/1> The porosity and gauge of a weave are reduced by saturating the yarns of the fabric with a liquid which is volatilized when the fabric is subjected to a temperature in excess of the boiling point of the liquid whilst being constrained in a direction normal to the fabric. The fabric may pass through a trough of liquid, Fig. 5 (not shown), and thence between calendering rollers heated by high pressure steam. The volatilization of the liquid exerts a force in the plane of the fabric causing round filaments to adopt an elliptical section, Fig. 4. The liquid may be water or a solution of an agent, used for pretreating the yarns of the fabric and a temperature of 350 DEG to 450 DEG F. may be used. The fabric may be passed through the machine at between 1.5 and 3.5 feet per minute.
