Abstract

Cellulosic textile materials, e.g. fibres, yarns and woven and non-woven fabrics consisting wholly of natural cellulose fibres, such as cotton or linen, cellulose acetate or viscose rayon or containing more than 50% by weight of such cellulose fibres in admixture with non cellulosic fibres such as nylon and wool, are stiffened by treating them with a mixture of formaldehyde, a modified starch capable of forming flexible films and containing a high proportion of material having a branched molecular structure than normal farinaceous starch which contains about 80% by weight of such material and pentaerythritol and heating in the presence of sufficient acid, e.g. phosphoric, oxalic or tartaric acid, or substance which liberates an acid, e.g. magnesium dihydrogen phosphate zinc nitrate or magnesium chloride, under such conditions that reaction takes place between the formaldelyde, modified starch, pentaerythritol and cellulosic textile material. The modified starch may be normal farinaceous starch which has been etherified, e.g. a hydroxyalkylated starch, or a degraded starch in which the amylopectium content has been increased and is preferably present in the treating liquor in a concentration of 3-10% by weight of the treating liquor so that 2-6% by weight is deposited on the textile material. The treating liquor may also contain an agent to modify the handle of the textile material which does not absorb chlorine, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl acetate or copolymers thereof such as a vinylacetate/vinyl caprate copolymer. The textile materials are preferably dried after impregnation and before heating. Treated fabrics may be used for making petticoats, collars, cuffs, linings and interlinings. Specification 827,645 is referred to.
