Abstract

916,411. Hand shears. WILKINSON SWORD Ltd., and RANDOLPH, H. B. Dec. 30, 1960 [Dec. 30, 1959], No. 44178/59. Class 30. [Also in Group XXV] A hand tool, e.g. secateurs, comprising a pair of pivotally interconnected members, has means to vary the permitted range of relative angular displacement of the members. One member 12 (Figs. 1, 5) has an enlarged part-circular portion 12b in the vicinity of the pivot formed with peripheral slots 30, 31 adapted to be engaged by a detent 32 slidable within the handle 16 of the other member 11 and controlled by a thumb lever 33 pivotally mounted on the handle. The detent has a recess 34a engaged by a projection 35 on the axis of the thumb lever so that when the latter is turned the detent can be engaged either with the slot 30, to hold the members closed, or with the slot 31, to enable the members to open until the detent abuts the end 31a of the slot. Further turning of the thumb lever retracts the detent from the slot 31 to permit the members to open fully. In another embodiment, Fig. 8, the detent is provided with an annulus 41 fitting around a circular disc 40 eccentrically mounted on the axis of the thumb lever. The thumb lever may be positively held in any of its three positions by a spring-loaded ball 36 supported in the handle 16 to engage corresponding recesses in the lever; alternatively, the ball may be supported in the lever. The members are interconnected by a pivot of the type described and claimed in Specification 916,412. Specification 916,413 also is referred to.
