A woven or tufted and rubber-backed carpet is produced by a process which includes forming a blend of regenerated cellulose staple fibres and staple fibres of polyacrylonitrile, i.e. including homopolymers of acrylonitrile and copolymers of acrylonitrile with other polymerizable compounds such as methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate or styrene and containing at least 85% by weight of acrylonitrile in the copolymer. spinning the blend into yarn containing 80- 50% by weight of the cellulose fibres and 20- 50% by weight of the acrylic fibres and forming a carpet using the blended yarn as the basis of the pile.
