Abstract
687,736. Mixed fibre yarns. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Aug. 1, 1950 [Aug. 2, 1949], No. 19170/50. Class 120(iii) Shrinkproof yarns comprise wool and from 15 to 40 per cent of staple fibre prepared from an acrylonitrile polymer containing at least 85 per cent acrylonitrile. Polyacrylonitrile fibres may be used, preferably in the proportion of 15 to 30 per cent of the blend; or a co-polymer of acrylonitrile and and up to 15 per cent of vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, acrylic and methacrylic acids or derivatives and homologues thereof, styrene, methyl vinyl ketone, vinyl pyridines, isobutylene or other polymerizable hydrocarbons may be used, the co-polymer fibres preferably forming from 30 to 40 per cent of the blend. A particular blend contains 30 to 40 per cent of fibres prepared from a copolymer containing 95 per cent acrylonitrile and 5 per cent 2-vinyl pyridine. The acrylonitrile homo-polymer or co-polymer preferably has a molecular weight of from 40,000 to 250,000. The wool and acrylonitrile polymer fibres may be stock blended and then spun into a yarn using the American (modified cotton) spinning system; or slivers of acrylonitrile polymer staple may be combined with wool top on the drawing frame of the American spinning system.
