A mechanical seal for a rotary pump shaft j comprises a stationary seal-ring a urged into contact with a rotary seal-ring s by springs b located in pockets in two similar mounting plates c surrounding the shaft and detachably secured to a seal-plate e bolted to the pump housing, the springs b bearing on a thrust-plate g whose position can be observed through inspection holes f in the plates c. The thrustplate g is screwed at g<SP>1</SP> to the end of the ring a and studs p secured to the ring a engage axial slots g<SP>1</SP> in the plate e. The seal-ring s is carried by a part q having slots engaged by studs r secured to a sleeve h threadedly secured to the shaft at k and locked by studs i. Cooling liquid is supplied through inlets o. The sleeve h is axially located during assembly by aligning a mark t thereon with the end face u of the pump housing.
