Abstract

908,036. Making cables. PIRELLI-GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd. Nov. 14, 1960 [Dec. 18, 1959], No. 43042/59. Class 36. [Also n Group XXII] In the manufacture of oil-filled electric cables, the core or cores are first evacuated and dried, a sheath is then applied by extrusion and the core or cores are impregnated, all these steps being performed under vacuum. A lead-sheathed core 3 leaving an extrusion die 4 passes through a first vacuum chamber 9 and then through a seal 8 into a second vacuum chamber 10 where the sheath is cooled by a water spray 13. The chambers are evacuated by connections 11, 12 to a steam-jet ejector. An outer seal 6 closes the chamber 10 and a seal 5 is provided against the extrusion press 1. Upon leaving the chamber 10 the cable core is impregnated whilst the vacuum still exists between the core and sheath, a valved plug having been fitted to each end of the cable.
