Abstract
1458065 Flat cables CONNECTA 25 Feb 1974 [9 March 1973] 8397/74 Heading H1A A flat electrical cable comprises a group of conductors 10, 11 separated from a further group 20, 21 by insulating strip 4 of a thermosetting synthetic material such as polytetrafluorethylene and enclosed by two further insulating strips 5, 6 which are also of polytetrafluorethylene, the strips having been secured together by pressure. A method of making such a cable comprises distributing the conductors of two or more groups as shown in Fig. 3, interposing insulating strips 40, 41, applying outer insulating strips 5, 6 and compressing the whole assembly to secure the strips together. One group of conductors 30, 31, 32 may first be secured to an outer strip 6, a strip 41 added and followed by a further group of conductors 20, 21, 22, a still further group of conductors 10, 11, 12, is secured to the outer strip 5 and this assembly secured to the conductors 20, 21, 22 with a strip 40 interposed. A machine for producing the cable comprises cylinders 7, 71 for feeding conductors 20, 21 and 10, 11 respectively carried in circumferential grooves, e.g. 71 and rollers 8, 8<SP>1</SP> with circumferential grooves 81, 82, and 81<SP>1</SP>, 82<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 5, not shown) respectively for feeding the outer insulating strips 6 and 5 respectively. Insulating strip 4 is interposed at the gap between the rollers 8, 8<SP>1</SP> where the assembly is compressed and where, when the strips 5 and 6 are of polytetrafluorethylene the temperature, advantageously, is close to 100‹ C. The cable then passes into an oven where the strips are heatsecured at a temperature of more than 330‹ C. Advantageously the cylinders 7 and 7<SP>1</SP> may be provided with ribs e.g. 72 to produce imprints in the strips 5 and 6 respectively for receiving the conductors of the other group and the grooves 81, 82 for example in the roller 8 may be of greater depth than the corresponding grooves 81<SP>1</SP>, 82<SP>1</SP> in the roller 8<SP>1</SP> to take into account the presence of the intermediate strip 4.
