Abstract

553,964. Cable joints. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., SCOTT, T. R., and LEE, E. C. Dec. 5, 1941, No. 15710. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group V] A cable joint 12 is enclosed in longitudinally divided preformed cylinders made of paper impregnated or bonded with a thermoplastic material such as styrene by rolling under light pressure. Several concentric cylinders 13 are applied, each being compressed in a mould after application. The cylinders are of dimensions to fill the stepped formation of the core 11 and cut insulation 18 and the joints between the sections are staggered. The outer cylinder has grooves 15 in which rubber rings are located. A screenig tape is applied with lacquer and an outer metal sleeve 14 with split lead bushes 16 at its ends encloses the whole. If a rubber compound is used, a vulcanizing agent is added. For a multicore cable a diaphragm extends across the outer sleeve and has a short tube attached to receive each core the tube being rolled into the grooves containing rubber rings. During compression the grooves are protected by inserting split rings or metal tape. The first layer of insulation fitting over the joint 12 and cable ends 11 may be of moulded styrene compound.
