Abstract

892,873. Liquid-insulated cables. ANACONDA WIRE & CABLE CO. Sept. 14, 1960 [Sept. 23, 1959], No. 31663/60. Class 36. Periodic thermal expansion and contraction of the oil in an oilfilled power cable 10 are utilized by unidirectional valves 22, 28 at each end of the cable to produce a flow of oil through the cable, so that degraded oil is replaced by fresh. Oil is circulated through the cable from a reservoir 24, containing reconditioned oil, to a degraded-oil reservoir 30, and a recycling system, including a reconditioning unit 37 may be employed. In the form shown, the cable comprises a single conductor 14, helically wrapped with paper tape 15 and covered with a lead sheath 16 whose inner surface has longitudinal grooves 18 through which, after installation of the cable, oil 19 is forced under pressure to impregnate the tape 15, but the oil may alternatively be circulated in the spaces between two or more separate conductors. A pipe-type cable (Fig. 3, not shown) is also described.
