1309390 Stuffing-boxes BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 8 Dec 1970 [9 Dec 1969] 60012/69 Addition to 1201528 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] A machine for extruding a covering on to an advancing cable or core C as disclosed in the parent Specification has a seal at the upstream end of the core tube through which the core passes which comprises an apertured barrier wall 3 which allows passage of the core, and which is provided within the core tube or within a housing 1 secured to the core tube as by a screw-threaded end and 0-ring 7, a helical packing 16, and adjustable pressure-imparting means 11, 18 for compressing the packing against the barrier wall. The core C may be a solid aluminium conductor of sector or segmental cross-section. The packing 16 may be made of strands of P.T.F.E. with or without a graphite filler formed into a rope which may be prevented from unravelling by one or more lappings of P.T.F.E. tape. The barrier wall 3 and a sleeve 6 are retained in the housing 1 by screws 5, 8 and a bush 14 is pressed on to the packing by a spring 11 which is loaded by a hand wheel 18; alternatively the bush may be pressed by fluid pressure.
