Abstract
1386065 Extrusion coating of twin conductors BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 13 Sept 1972 [13 Sept 1971] 13827/74 Divided out of 1371211 Heading B5A For use in apparatus for extruding a covering 14 on two or more parallel coplanar conductors including at least one with insulation 12, a die set comprises an outer die 21 of circular bore 22 and an inner die or point 31 having adjacent its outlet end a circular external section which, with the bore 22 of the outer die 21 defines an annular extrusion orifice. The bore 33 of the inner die 31, through which the conductors 11, 19 pass, has a non-circular section comprising arcuate parts 34 united by intermediate parts 35 shaped to suit the outline of the conductor assembly. The intermediate parts 35 may be re-entrant, forming a dumb-bell shaped bore. A method of manufacturing a cable comprises passing the conductors 11, 19 through the core tube of a machine having an extrusion orifice defined by the die set 21, 31, to apply a continuous overall covering 14 around the conductors, and establishing across the covering at the extrusion orifice a pressure differential sufficient to cause the covering 14 to collapse firmly on to the conductors but insufficient to force the covering back along the core tube. The resulting covering 14 is of approximately uniform radial thickness around most of its periphery, having arcuate end parts 16 united by re-entrant parts 17, and bounding a single bore 13. Preferably the pressure differential is maintained by evacuating the core tube as claimed in Specification 1,371,211; but if the covering 14 is to be treated by the application or abstraction of heat, super-atmospheric pressure may be applied via a fluid medium in a chamber surrounding the covering and sealed to the extrusion orifice, as claimed in Specification 1,386,066. The thickness of the covering 14 can be controlled by altering the throughput speed, so allowing wider tolerances on the dimensions of the dies 21, 31. It is stated that no bonding occurs between the primary insulation 12 and the covering 14, even without the use of French chalk or other preventive material, and even when the primary insulation and the covering are of the same material, e.g. PVC.
