Abstract
1369678 Apparatus for coating and impregnating cable BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd 16 March 1972 [16 March 1971] 6999/71 Heading D1L [Also in Division H1] Apparatus for coating and filling the interstices between elongate elements of an elongate flexible body (e.g. telecommunications cable comprising a plurality of plastics insulated conductors) with a water-impermeable filling medium (e.g. petroleum jelly) comprises a closed cylindrical chamber 1 surrounded by a heater 2, an inlet port 3 and outlet port 4 for introduction and removal of the filling medium to and from the chamber under pressure, inlet and outlet dies 5 and 6 respectively through which the body passes to and from the chamber, annular bodies 9 and 10 of heat insulating material positioned to limit heat losses from the chamber 1, and annular cooling chambers 7 and 8 surrounding the dies 5 and 6 and cooled with e.g. water to maintain the dies at a temperature which prevents leakage of filling medium from the chamber. The filling medium may pass through the chamber 1 in the same or the opposite direction to the body to be treated. In a modification (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) the inlet die has more than one orifice to allow a plurality of cables to pass into the chamber and the outlet die has a single opening large enough to allow all the cables to pass out of the chamber. With this arrangement a plurality of separate cables are simultaneously impregnated with water proof filling medium and laid-up together to form a single composite core. The coating and filling apparatus is preferably arranged on the outlet side of a final bunching or stranding head of apparatus for manufacturing multicore conductor cable.
