Abstract
1390484 Curing and cooling extrudate CANADA WIRE & CABLE Ltd 9 April 1973 [10 April 1972] 16908/73 Heading B5A A coating of heat-curable insulating material is applied to a conductor 1 by an extruder 2 and is cured and cooled by passage through an elongated chamber 3 containing a liquid which is under pressure to prevent voids in the insulation and which has a temperature gradient such that the insulation is first heated to cure and then cooled by portions of the same liquid. Chamber 3 contains a glycol which is circulated in the first section a by a pump 10 and heated in a tank 9, and which is stationary in section b and cooled by water circulating in a jacket. The insulated wire passes through pipe 19 into which water is pumped for further cooling, a burner 23 which removes traces of glycol, a painting station 24, a paint drier 25, and a printer 26. The insulation may be polythene or PVC crosslinked by dicumyl peroxide, or an elastomer such as neoprene, SBR, or an ethylene-propylene compound.
