Abstract
1,137,626. Coating cores by extrusion. PHELPS DODGE COPPER PRODUCTS CORP. 24 June, 1966, No. 28543/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division H1] Voids between a stranded or single core conductor and an extruded plastics sheath are largely prevented by passing the newly extruded sheath from an extruder 3 into a chamber 5 containing pressurized steam at a temperature above 212 F., but below the temperature of the sheath, and from thence into. water chambers defined by interface 8 and outlet 11 and seal 17 respectively. The upstream chamber includes a water level control 9 and contains essentially stagnant water at a temperature, e.g. within the range 200 F.-120 F. The downstream chamber is supplied with water, which may be at ambient temperature, from a pump 14 and at a pressure equal to the steam pressure. Seal 17 may provide water lubrication for the exiting conductor and sheath. A conventional take-off mechanism comprises caterpillars 12, 13 and a reel 18. Plastics mentioned are polyethylene and polypropylene, or mixtures thereof with polyisobutylene, PVC, and as a thermosetting resin, cross-linked polyethylene. Further, a layer of thermoplastic or thermosetting semi-conducting material, formed, e.g. by the addition of carbon black, may be extruded on to the conductor before addition of the sheath proper. In one example a semi-conducting thermosetting cross-linked polyethylene layer is sheathed with thermosetting polyethylene and in another, a semiconducting layer is sheathed with thermoplastic polyethylene.
