Abstract
1344686 Extruding conductor coverings STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 14 Oct 1971 47835/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division H1] The insulation around each conductor in a low-capacitance multiconductor telephone cable consists of an inner cellular portion and an outer solid portion integral with it. The cable core is filled with a water impervious material, e.g. petroleum jelly. The conductors may be of copper, aluminium or a copper or aluminium alloy, and the insulation of polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride. Each cable may be made by extruding a plastics material containing a blowing agent, e.g. azodicarbonamide over the conductor at a temperature below that at which the blowing occurs then heating the conductor by joule heating (e.g. in a r.f. field) or that the blowing gas is released in the vicinity of the conductor only. Alternatively, the whole of the extruded insulation may be made cellular, and a further extrusion carried out to provide the solid insulation.
