1414486 Filled cable BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd 11 June 1973 [9 June 1972] 27044/72 Heading H1A Each unit 1 or 2 of a telecommunications cable comprises insulated conductors 11 surrounded by a barrier layer 14, with the interstices filled with a greasy water-impermeable medium 13, e.g. petroleum jelly. The spaces between the units 1, 2, and between them and the sheath (7, Fig. 1, not shown), are filled with a non-greasy water-impermeable material 3; this is preferably a mass of cellular material which is foamed after assembly by the heat of extrusion of the sheath (7), so as to adhere to or exert pressure on the adjacent surfaces to prevent longitudinal water flow. A tape (4), e.g. of polyethylene terephthalate impermeable to the material 3 and a conductive screen, e.g. of polyethylene/aluminium/polyethylene tape may be applied about the group of cable units before the application of the outer plastics sheath. Examples of materials for all parts of the cable are given.
