Abstract

1,194,634. Cables. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 22 May, 1968 [23 May, 1967], No. 24462/68. Heading H1A. A multi-conductor cable 10 comprises a plurality of insulated metallic conductors 11 surrounded by a protective jacket 16, which comprises an inner layer 20, of resinous foam material, in a metallic shield 21, an enclosing adhesive layer 24 and an outer covering 25, the interstitial spaces 13 between the conductors being filled with a closed cell resinous material 14. The conductors may be single or multiple strand conductors and may comprise a plurality of twisted pairs of conductors. The cable may be made by coating the insulated conductors with a foamable material, assembling the conductors into a bundle, and foaming the coating. Alternatively a number of expandable resinous microspheres may be positioned within said interstitial spaces and expanded by heating. A metallic shield having a foamable coating on at least one side is placed around the conductor, the coating foamed, and the whole then covered by an extruded outer layer.
