Abstract

1318418 Vulcanizing extruded coatings ANACONDA WIRE & CABLE CO 18 Aug 1970 39662/70 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions C3 and H1] A cable is manufactured by passing cable core 12 through extruders 9 and 10 in which a layer of semi-conducting thermoplastic and a layer of insulating thermoplastic are successively applied to the core to form cable 14 which is fed directly into catenary vulcanizing chamber 15. The chamber is filled with a non-conducting gas under pressure and is heated. Transition sealing means between chamber 15 and cooling chamber 36 comprise flange 37 connected to cylinder 38 which is welded to sump enclosure 39. Similarly pipe 40 is connected by flange 41 to flanged cylinder 42 at the downstream end of enclosure 39, within which is a baffle plate system [described in Figs. 4 and 5, (not shown)] which seals chamber 15 from chamber 36 while allowing the cable to pass through these chambers into extruder 82, in which it is coated with a semiconducting polymeric layer containing axially arranged ground or drain wires. The cable then passes to apparatus 85, comprising a cooling chamber, or further vulcanizing and cooling apparatus. In alternative embodiments, the final coating containing wires is applied by an extruder immediately downstream of extruders 9 and 10 [as defined in Fig. 7 (not shown)], before the cable enters the vulcanizing chamber, or a single multiple extruder is used to apply the three specified coating layers.
