Abstract
1421109 Extrusion coating cables DAINICHI-NIPPON CABLES Ltd and MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 12 June 1974 [12 June 1973] 26030/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division H1] An electric cable is produced by extruding a crystalline polymer and a cross-linking agent R on to a conductor 1 in a long-land die 3 (1 to 50 m. long) to the inner surface of which a lubricant 4 is fed, curing the polymer, and cooling the polymer in a main cooling apparatus 52 containing pressurized cooling fluid after passage through a relatively mild cooling zone 51 contain fluid (which may also be pressurized) at between 40 C. and the melting point of the polymer. Braking is applied to the conductor to compensate for the pull exerted on the cable covering by the pressure of the cooling fluid in the manner-described in Specification 1,408,947. The lubricants described in Specification 1,380,942 are supplied from an annular reservoir 42 through a slit 43 in the die 3. The polymer may be a polyolefin or copolymers of poly-α- olefins such as E.V.A. Several extruders are connected to a cross head die to form semiconductive and insulating layers on bare or nylon cloth coated conductors.
