1292227 Extrusion coating electrical conductors SUDDEUTSCHE KABELWERKE ZWEIGNIEDERLASSUNG DER VEREINIGTE DEUTSCHE METALLWERKE AG 19 March 1970 [28 March 1969] 13286/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division H1] An electrical conductor 31, e.g. stranded aluminium of round section, is covered with an insulating layer of cross-linked polyethylene by passage through a heated extrusion crosshead to which polyethylene 34 containing crosslinking agent, e.g. 0À8 part by weight dicumyl peroxide, is delivered through one or more ducts from one or more chambers 10 in which the cross-linking has been initiated by heating under high pressure, e.g. 10,000 atmospheres, the cross-linking being completed during passage through the elongated transversely adjustable and heated die 20<SP>1</SP> of the head, e.g. heated to 260‹ to 290‹ C. and of 250 mm. length, respectively, for conductors of 95 and 150 sq. mm. cross-section, respectively, coated with 1À3 mm. and 7À5 mm. polyethylene. It is stated that the high extrusion pressure eliminates the need to draw the conductor 31 through the die head, from the die whereof the covering is cooled by passage through an unpressurized cooling device and coiled under zero tension. In the Fig. 2 embodiment (not printed) the insulating layer is applied directly to the conductor, but in the Fig. 3 embodiment the insulating layer is applied over a cross-linkable semi-conducting smoothing layer 33, e.g. of ethylene polymer filled with carbon black, which is applied to the conductor 31 in the same head and simultaneously cross-linked during passage through the die 20<SP>1</SP>. In the Fig. 4 embodiment (not printed) the semi-conducting and insulating layers are applied by passage through consecutive heads, in either the former or the latter whereof the cross-linking of the semi-conducting layer is completed. The extrusion surfaces of the head are covered with an adhesion preventing covering. The pressure effect of the elongated die 201 may be enhanced by the passage thereof tapering towards the outlet. The cross-linking prior to extrusion from the die and the high pressure therein prevents the formation of voids or bubbles in the insulation.
