Abstract

1,237,173. Cable insulation. PIRELLI S.p.A. 18 March 1969 [26 March, 1968; 23 Dec., 1968], No. 14081/69. Heading H1A. A process for forming an insulating covering around a cable core or a plurality of cores comprises the steps of successively extruding at least three layers of insulating material around said cores, each layer being not more than 2 millimeters thick. The number of layers may be between five and one hundred, and each layer may not be less than 0À2 millimeters thick. The layers may all be of same thickness or the innermost layers may be thinner than the outermost. The layers may be extruded at positions spaced apart by not less than 30 millimeters. The layers may be extruded through an extrusion head having a plurality of annular extrusion nozzles disposed in series or sequentially through a plurality of extrusion heads disposed in series. The layers may all be of the same material or alternate layers may be composed of one of two materials. The two materials may be low and high density polyethylene; low meltindex and high melt-index polyethylene; polyethylene and propylene; cross-linked ethylene propylene and cross-linked polyethylene; EPD terpolymer and ethylene-propylene; EPD terpolymer and cross-linked polyethylene. The insulation could be applied to a single core or each core or bundle of cores of a multi-core cable and then covered by an outer layer of copper wires and a polyethylene sheath.
