Abstract
1441149 Sheathing cables by extrusion SCHLUMBERGER TECHNOLOGY CORP 29 Oct 1973 [30 Oct 1972] 50173/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division H1] In the manufacture of a well-logging cable the centre conductor 10 is formed by spiralling conductive wires 20 around a plastic monofilament, a fluorocarbon polymer for examples and then heating the wire under tension so that they partially embed in the monofilament. The resulting configuration is then passed through extruders where the external interstices between the wires 24 are filled with thermoplastic filler material and a layer of insulation 25, is applied overall. This insulation may be a fluorocarbon polymer. The completed conductor 10 is then fed into an extruding device which applies neoprene or other semi-conductive elastomer to form the matrix member 11 and from there to a closing die at which the solid insulated conductor 12 are spiralled around and embedded in the matrix 11. In a second extruding device the uncured outer sheathing material 13 is applied under pressure to cause the matrix material to extrude about the outer parts of the conductors 12 and to merge with the inner core member 10. The assembly is then cured in an oven which forms the sheathing in to a monolithic body firmly embedding the conductors with substantially no voids. Finally inner and outer armour wires 15 and 16 are applied by known means.
