Abstract
944,546. Cable end terminations. AUSTRAL STANDARD CABLES PTY Ltd. July 30, 1962 [July 31, 1961], No. 29184/62. Heading H2E. The ends of cable sheathed with thermoplastic material are sealed by forming a pocket in the end of the cable and closing it to prevent the outward notion of conductors and the ingress of moisture. In the arrangement of Fig. 1, the pocket is formed by forcing back conductors 3 or stretching the sheath, and heating a mixture of polyethylene and conductive granules by a dielectric heater so that the polyethylene melts and seals the sheath. In a further arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown), the metal granules are replaced by a metal insert while in another the sheath itself is sealed by heat and pressure. In yet another arrangement a thermoplastic or metallic tube is placed over the sheath and then bonded to it.
