Abstract
864,832. Cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Sept. 11, 1959, No. 31040/59. Class 36. To avoid internal discharges a power cable is provided with a composite tape, comprising a metallic layer bonded to a thermoplastic layer, with the metallic layer in contact with the conductor, and a thermoplastic insulation, the materials of the thermoplastic layer and the insulation being compatible. A further layer of composite tape. with the metal layer outermost may be provided over the insulation; either immediately after extrusion so that the heat thereof effects fusion of the thermoplastic layer to the insulation, or subsequently; the fusion in the latter case being effected by passing the taped cable through a heated chamber. The metallic layer may be aluminium foil and the thermoplastic material polyethylene.
