Abstract
1,025,956. Laminates. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 27, 1963 [March 27, 1962], No. 12170/63. Heading B5N. A tape suitable for electrical insulation which is to be impregnated with a resin comprises a sheet of siliceous material such as asbestos, mica or glass in the form of a paper or flakes, a backing layer of glass cloth or glass fibres and a bonding layer of a fused thermoplastic material which has no sharp melting point and no high fluidity at elevated temperatures, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylate, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetobutyrate or polyvinyl acetal, or blends thereof. The tape may be impregnated before or after it is applied to the structure to be insulated and suitable resins are epoxy resins, polyester resins, polyimides and silicones. The tape is made by superposing the three layers and passing them over or between heated rollers or by winding the layers on a roll and heating in an oven to fuse the thermoplastic layer. Alternatively the backing layer may be a metal foil and the laminate may be used for the manufacture of condensers.
