Abstract
839,138. Cables. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 4, 1957 [Nov. 9, 1956], No. 34332/57. Class 36. [Also in Groups XXV and XXXV] An electric conductor 1 is wrapped either simultaneously, Fig. 1, or consecutively, Fig. 2, not shown, with two tapes 2, 3, the inner tape 3 being of a thermoplastic polyolefin, e.g. polypropylene or polyethylene, which softens at a temperature of over 80‹ C. and the outer tape 2 being of an oriented polyolefin cross-linked by irradiation with high energy electrons. The wrapped assembly is subjected to a temperature of over 100‹ C. which causes the inner tape 3 to soften and the outer tape 2 to shrink and squeeze the softened tape 3 into the voids and air spaces caused by the wrapping.
