Abstract

886,417. Cables. POSTMASTERGENERAL, and TELEPHONE CABLES Ltd. April 21, 1960 [April 21, 1959], No. 13579/59. Class 36. The laid-up cores of a cable are surrounded by a metallic layer with a thermoplastic polymeric coating outermost which is bonded to the inside of a thermoplastic polymeric sheath. Aluminium foil and extruded polyethylene sheets united by rolling are cut into strips which are applied to the core, a polyethylene coating outermost, helically or longitudinally, with or without overlap, a gap being useful for core drying. The core then traverses an extrusion head where a polyethylene sheath is applied under vacuum and at a sufficiently high temperature to weld said coated layer to said sheath. Longitudinal conductivity of the layer is ensured by a helical or longitudinal conductor extending between said layer and the core, when the aluminium foil must be coated on the outside only.
