Abstract

The insulated core of a high voltage transmission cable comprising a stranded conductor 1 of circular cross-seetion with a copper tape outer layer 2, semi-conductive layer 3 and insulation 4 is supported by longitudinal, tubes 5. of insulating material within at conductive cover. The cover. has an insulating layer 6 next the tubes and a semi-conductive one 7 between it and the conductive screen 8. An outer sheath (not shown), may be present in certain forms. The tubes 5 are of extruded polypropylene, with arcuate or angled surfaces towards the core, touching one anotheronly adjacent to layer 6, but they may be of other materials, and shapes, and may be fabricated from flat strip. They may be laid-up helically around the core to allow bending. The tubes and the spaces between, them form gas ducts, and the cable is pressurized, withinsulating gas.
