Abstract
1290886 Telephone cables STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 27 May 1971 17516/71 Heading H1A A method of manufacturing a multiconductor telephone cable includes the steps of insulating an electrical conductor 1 or 12 by arranging it in a tube of insulating material 2 or 13 the tube being deformed (Fig. 4) or the conductor (Fig. 1) having been deformed such that the conductor contacts the tube at intervals along its length, forming a cable core from a plurality of such insulated conductors, impregnating the core with a water-impervious jelly - like material and providing a protective sheath over the core. The conductor may be copper, aluminium or copper/ aluminium alloy, the insulating tube of polyethylene, polypropylene or polyvinylchloride, the water-impervious material of petroleum jelly and the protective sheath of polyethylene. The conductor 5, Fig. 3, may be formed in a sinusoidal or sawtooth waveform by teeth 8 and the insulation 11 is extruded from an extruder 10 so as to surround the deformed conductor. Alternatively the conductor may be straight and the insulation deformed by vibrating or crimping the hot insulation as it leaves the extruder. The conductor may be arranged on a helical lay.
