Abstract
1,108,762. Extruding cable sheathings. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 28 July, 1965 [11 Aug., 1964], No. 32685/64. Heading B5A. [Also in Division H1] Using an extrusion nozzle as described in Specification 967,567, an electrical conductor is coated with multiple layers of polyolefin by simultaneous extrusion of an inner semiconductive layer, an intermediate insulating one and an outer semi-conductive one. Extrusion and subsequent controlled cooling conditions ensure that the layers become intimately bonded together. They are then subjected to a crosslinking process, suitably by irradiation with electrons, then a gas-permeable tape layer is applied to form a screen. This may be done by winding a copper tape helically over a conductive or semi-conductive textile bedding tape. One or more such cores may be enclosed in an aluminium sheath with space inside for a pressurized inert insulating gas. For example three cores may be bound together with tape and sheathed in an aluminium tube webbed about the core assembly from aluminium strip by highfrequency electric welding. The aluminium sheath may be externally protected against corrosion by an outer layer of organic material, such as extruded polyvinylchloride.
