Abstract
1458127 Power cables FELTEN & GUILLEAUME KABELWERKE AG 7 Feb 1974 [5 April 1973 2 Aug 1973] 05709/74 Heading H1A In a high tension power cable the diameter of a cooling water channel 3 is at least 60 mm. when the conductor is of aluminium and at least 70 mm. when it is of copper. The conductor may comprise a helically or toroidally corrugated metallic tube or windings of copper or aluminium wire members 1 on a smooth or a helically or toroidally corrugated tube 2 which may be of metal or plastics material. If aluminium is used to form the cooling water channel it may be protected against corrosion by a tubular lining of copper or plastics material or may be provided with an internal coating of metallic oxide. The electrical insulation 5 may be of oilimpregnated paper and the conductor and insulation screens 4 and 6 of carbon black paper and metallized paper respectively, or the insulation may be of a plastics material e.g. polyethylene, in which case the screen consist of an extruded layer of semiconductive plastics material. Copper tape may be applied over the layer 6. The resulting cable core may be drawn into a corrugated aluminium tube 7 which has a covering 8 of a plastics material and a PVC outer sheath 9. The outer surface of the sheath and/or conductor may be covered with a material of low thermal conductivity. In a modification of the embodiment the hollow channel may be formed from a tube of lead or aluminium, the conductor wires of aluminium and a tube of aluminium forced or extruded over the conductor wires in order to contain any leaks of coolant within the conductor. Specific examples of conductor dimensions are given and claimed. The wall thickness of the conductor may be increased with increasing distance from the coolant inlet to correspond with the increased resistivity due to the higher temperature. This increase may take place at each point between adjacent cable sections, each cable section having a uniform wall thickness.
