Abstract

982,748. Electric cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Sept. 13, 1963 [Sept. 19, 1962], No. 36173/63. Heading H1A. In a low capacitance, air-spaced high frequency coaxial cable the effective dielectric constant of the material between its conductors 1, 6 is reduced by having two layers of insulating material, the internal one consisting of a rope 2 helically enclosing the inner conductor 1 and bounded by a plastics foil 4, and the external one consisting of a plastics foam layer 5. The rope 2 may be of polyethylene thread or of polyethylene foam which may be strengthened with a core 3 of conducting or insulating material, e.g. polyamide, and the external insulating layer 5 may also be of polyethylene foam. The outer conductor 6 is of copper mesh or tape and is covered with a protective sheath 7 of P.V.C. The plastics foil 4 may be of cellulose triacitate, polyethylene or polypropylene.
