Abstract

553,027. Cable joints. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and SCOTT, T. R. Oct. 31, 1941, No. 14017. [Class 38 (i)] A joint between a cable having insulation of paper and one having rubber insulation is covered by wrapping or taping the joint with acetylated cotton, acetylated paper, or other fibrous material impregnated with a mixture of rubber and polystyrene that bonds with both types of cable insulation. After baring and jointing the cores, the exposed insulation of both cables is basted with a mixture of polystyrene and monostyrene and the impregnated tape lapped on, each layer being basted. If both cables have lead sheaths the joint is sealed in a metallic sleeve, any space between the wrapped tape and the sleeve being filled with compound containing polystyrene. If only one cable has a lead sheath lead foil may be applied outside the tape to extend and terminate the sheath. Specifications 504,720 and 532,687 are referred to.
