[Class 36] An impregnated cable having a gas dissolved in the impregnating compound is constructed with one or more longitudinal channels into which the gas is introduced and which are eliminated when the gas has dissolved in the compound. The insulated core is impregnated in the usual manner and the lead sheath applied so that there is a clearance between the core and sheath. The air is evacuated and a suitable gas such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide or acetylene allowed to enter under a pressure of a few atmospheres. After the insulating compound has become saturated with the gas, the ends of the cable are sealed and the lead sheath pressed on to the core.
