904,427. Welding by pressure. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. Aug. 7, 1959 [Aug. 8, 1958], No. 27102/59. Class 83 (4). A method of producing a vacuum-tight joint by resistance welding is characterized in that a closure member 3 and a housing 4 initially make contact over only a narrow annular area 9. Current is passed between the two electrodes 1 and 2 and when the edge of the member 3 is molten, pressure is applied so that the resultant weld is broader than the original contact. In a modification, the member 3 has a stepped edge to prevent impurities passing to the inside of the container. Conductor wires 6 and 7 may be previously secured in the member 3 by glass seals.
