The pressure in a sealed tube filled with argon or a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen and enclosing overlapping contact springs is reduced so that the area of glow-discharge on contact opening is greater than the contact area. The area of glow-discharge may comprise the entire area of a contact spring within the tube (Fig. 2, not shown), or an area covered by a foil of a metal having a melting point at least as high as 2400 ‹ C. as described in Specification 948,931.
