Abstract

1,015,582. Electromagnetic relays. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Oct. 25, 1962 [Nov. 2, 1961], No. 40363/62. Heading H2B. In a sealed magnetic contact device having mercury-wetted contacts, the mercury present is only that retained on the fixed and movable contacts. In manufacture the envelope of the device is connected to a reservoir 21 by a hollow terminal 17. Slugs of copper and/or tin are introduced into the reservoir followed by an excess of mercury. The assembly is then evacuated and filled with hydrogen prior to closing tube 22 by welding. The assembly is next held vertically with the contacts at the bottom, heated to 320‹ C. and vibrated longitudinally to wet the contacts. Finally, excess mercury is expelled from the envelope of the device by centrifuging and the terminal 17 is sealed.
