Abstract

861,653. Mercury switches. ENGEL & GIBBS Ltd. April 3, 1959 [May 7, 1958], No. 14654/58. Class 38 (5). An evacuated or inert gas-filled glass envelope containing mercury or other conductive liquid comprises a -main chamber 13 having electrodes 11 and 12 sealed in extensions 17 and 14 such that both retain a certain quantity of mercury throughout operation of the switch. When the envelope is tilted as in Fig. 2 the mercury flows into extension 14 to complete the circuit between electrodes 11 and 12 but a small accurately-calibrated hole 22 in a thin plate 21 allows the mercury to leave the chamber 13 such that after a predetermined delay (which may be of the order of one second to three minutes) the circuit between the electrodes 11 and 12 is broken. The plate 21 is less than 0.001 inch thick and is preferably of platinum 0.0005 inch thick.
