Abstract

808,161. Glass-to-metal seals. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Jan. 11, 1957, No. 1149/57. Class 36. [Also in Group XL (a)] A cylindrical metallic terminal, such as cap 8, is sealed into an aperture in a glass valve envelope 13 by securing an annular metal disc 9 about the cap 8, sealing a ring of glass 11, e.g. lead glass, around the edge of the disc to form a fork seal, and sealing this into a corresponding aperture in the envelope. The annular disc may be of nickel-iron alloy soldered by a copper-gold solder to the cap which may be copper-plated for use at radio frequencies. The disc also may be copperplated after the fork seal has been formed and both cap and disc may be borated to avoid over-oxidation. A recess 12 accommodates a plug 14 and connection 15 to the anode or other electrode.
