Abstract

904,133. Joining an upper to an outsole. NOVA, A., NOVA, R., and NOVA, O., [trading as NOVA, A. [Firm of]]. Feb. 21, 1961 [July 1, 1960; Oct. 20, 1960], No. 6330/61. Classes 17 (1) and 17 (2). An outsole 4 is joined to a lasted upper 2 and insole 3 by a method comprising introducing a rubber mix 5 into a recess formed in the upper and insole assembly by the last 1 having a continuous lip around and projecting from its bottom face, pressing the upper along a line defined by the lip into direct fluid-tight contact with the outsole 4 and vulcanizing the mix 5. The upper and insole assembly is slip lasted. The outsole blank 4 is placed on a plate 6 which may have a contoured surface to contour the sole, and the rubber mix 5 is then superimposed on the sole blank. The lasted assembly is pressed down towards the outsole blank 4, the plate 6 possessing means for centralizing the lasted assembly with respect to the outsole blank, until the lower margin of the lasted unit seals down on the outsole blank. The rubber mix is then vulcanized by heating the assembly preferably using a heated last, the rubber mix thus forming the bond between the upper and insole unit and the outsole in the finished shoe. Means for centralizing the lasted assembly with respect to the outsole blank include a plate having a raised, shaped and contoured platform, a plate having a shaped and contoured recess in the form of a sole and heel and also a plate having blocks to engage with the toe and heel portions of the shoe. The rubbery mix may be superimposed over the margin only of the top face of the outsole with the central area being covered by a conventional filler, e.g. felt.
