Abstract

786,267. Boots &c. BRITISH BATA SHOE CO., Ltd. Feb. 17, 1955 [April 28, 1954], No. 12270/54. Classes 17(1) and 17(2) A sole 10 including a heel 15 for cement attachment to a lasted insole-upper unit has a serrated margin 11 which forms a welt, a roughened zone 12 curved downwards and inwards to receive the cement and a plain inner surface 13. Two deep recesses 14 are provided in the heel seat. The sole is heated separately by infra-red rays to bring it to a softened plastic condition and vulcanizable cement is applied to the sole and to a lasted upper-insole unit. The parts are then placed in a press while the sole is hot enough to initiate vulcanization of the cement so that, on cooling, the sole will be set in a moulded form contoured to the under surface of the last as shown in Fig. 4 and the surfaces will be bonded together without a tendency for the sole to spring away from the upper. The press used comprises a pneumatic cushion 24, Fig. 7. over which a rubber wedge 25 is placed to contour the instep. Hydraulic or pneumatic pressure may be used in the press.
