Abstract

The shoe forming the subject of Specification 582,431 (which comprises a sole, or sole and heel, formed from a base material, such as felt, textile fabric or paper, impregnated with a plastic and an upper secured thereto by moulding) is made as follows: The upper is placed on a last which forms one member of a mould, and the base material and impregnating plastic is inserted into the other member of the mould, the surface of the base material facing the last and touching a portion of the upper that is turned over the last. A margin of plastic, the function of which is to bond the base material to the upper, is then applied around the edges of the base material, and the two parts of the mould are pressed together and heated to polymerize the plastic. The mould is then p cooled, the pressure released, and the shoe removed from the mould. The base material may be impregnated with the plastic before and/or after it is placed in the mould. The impregnating plastic may be in the form of a sheet or powder or granules; if it is in sheet form it may be applied either to the last or to the other member of the mould. When a raised wedge or platform heel is required, or an insole, these may be placed in the mould and incorporated with the shoe. The press described in Specification 640,366 may be used.
