Abstract
A shoe has an upper of any suitable material made in a conventional manner and a sole formed of a synthetic plastic. The upper has the portion to be attached to the sole pretreated with a binding agent and introduced into a mould containing the unformed sole material. The sole is moulded and welded to the upper by pressure and/or heat in a single operation and the mould is cooled before opening if necessary. The plastic of the sole is of the synthetic resin type as distinct from natural or mineral substances, and may contain colouring agents and is formed from sheet, granular, or powder material. The bonding agent is a suitable plastic, either the same as that used for the sole or compatible with it, and is preferably a liquid of thin paste type, e.g. a latex emulsion, dispersion or solution of polyvinyl chloride, polyisobutylene or polyvinyl acetate either alone, in combination or as co-polymers, suitably plasticized if necessary. To increase penetration, the upper may be roughened, cut, or if of leather, the grain may be removed or holes made so that plastic rivets form. After applying the bonding substance, drying to remove a solvent and/or heating for polymerization may be necessary.
